Your bats are talking

Six recordings from BirdWeather PUCs this Bat Week. Bats call far above what we can hear, so each clip is slowed down ten times, which brings the calls down into our range. Click a spectrogram to play it and watch the line move across the recording.

Across is time: the top panel is the whole six-second recording, and the line sweeps the part you're hearing.
Up is pitch, in kilohertz. Our hearing stops near 20 kHz; most of these bats call between 20 and 60.
The bottom panel is a zoom on a fraction of a second, so you can see the shape of each call.

Hear the bats over your own backyard

Every recording here came from a BirdWeather PUC Bat Edition and was identified automatically. By day it's a full BirdWeather PUC listening to the birds in your yard; after dark it switches to listening for bats.
