Research & evaluation

Published studies, field evaluations and experimental analyses.

PUC versus human listeners — Bo Kayser / Gedser

About this directory

This is a broad inventory of publicly documented work around BirdWeather, compiled on 25 September 2026. It covers research, conservation, education, apps, visualizations, displays, recording systems and developer tools.

What the evidence means. Published papers, conference abstracts, documented deployments, public code and proposals are labeled individually. Public code has not been installed or tested as part of this review. Older deployment reports do not confirm that a station is online today.

How projects connect. Some use BirdWeather observations or PUC hardware; others upload local detections or connect through BirdNET-Pi or BirdNET-Go. Using BirdNET does not automatically imply a BirdWeather connection.

Search coverage, counting and remaining gaps
  • Sources include institutional websites, publisher records, conference programs, theses, public datasets, app listings and GitHub repositories.
  • GitHub searches covered BirdWeather in repository names, descriptions and README files, named forks and Tweet Sheet variants. The screening audit contains 181 repository records.
  • Papers, their datasets and their analysis code are grouped as one research entry. Related copies and straightforward forks are grouped where possible. Counts describe catalog entries, not independent studies or tested apps.
  • Private, unpublished, unindexed and undocumented projects can be missing. The directory is not an enumeration of every live BirdWeather station.
  • A direct BirdWeather connection for Jer Thorp’s bird art was not verified.
  • Acoustic detection counts describe recorded vocal activity; they are not automatically estimates of bird abundance.

Every project links to its original sources. Follow those links for current documentation, availability and publication status.
